Libby’s Cardi

Made for my dear friend’s daughter who was so full of joy, she demanded a fun, easy to wear sweater.
A young girl’s sweater. Single button closure, slight flare out from waist to hip.Yoke in wide rib, body in stockinette. Body worked in one piece, worked flat, set in sleeves. Edging worked at same time as body.

Worsted weight yarn, size 9 needles
Gauge in stockinette (st st) 12 st and 17 rows = 4”
Gauge in yoke rib 13 st and 16 rows = 4”
Finished measurements: 22” long body, with 8” arm holes, 14” body, 34 inches in diameter
Yoke rib:
right side rows K3, P1
wrong side rows P3, K1

Body. CO 114 stitches, work in seed stitch for 5 rows. Change to body by continuing beginning and ending 5 stitches in seed stitch, and then st st for center 104 stitches. Every 10 rows , dec 2 stitches each row as follows: Work 5 st in seed stitch, K2tog, work to last 7 st, K2 tog, then work final 5 st in seed stitch (may use alternate decrease method of one’s choosing). Total of 6 decrease rows, then continue even until 13” from CO edge (102 stiches).
Separate at arm holes. Work 20 st by keeping 5 stitches in seed st, change to yoke rib for 15 st, place on waste yarn or stitch holder for front 2, cast off 6, work 50 st in yoke rib, place on waste yarn or stitch holder for back, cast off 6, work final 20 st  as 15 st in yoke rib, 5 stitches in seed st, for front 1.
Front 1. Work even in yoke rib with seed st edge for 4”. Cast off 1 stitch every other row at neck edge 10 times as follows:  work 5 seed st edge stitches, decrease 1, work rest in st st. Cast off remaining 10 stitches.
Front 2. Place stitches onto needle from holder, follow as for side 1, keeping decreases at neck edge
Back. Place stitches onto needle from holder. Work even in yoke rib for 7.5”. Work final 5 rows as follows: change to neck edging by working 10 st in yoke rib, seed stitch for center 30 st, final 10 st in yoke rib.
Join shoulder seams by matching yoke rib stitches on each front to yoke rib stitches on back, leaving seed st center stitches to join with seed st on sides of each front.
Sleeves. Cast on 30 stitches. Work 6 rows in K1P1 ribbing. Change to yoke rib, work sleeve by increasing 1 st each side every 6 rows a total of 7 times, then every 4 rows 3 times (50 st). Work even to 13” from cast on edge, cast off loosely.
Finishing. Set in and sew sleeves in place. Sews up sleeve seams. Pick one small button that will fit through the relatively loose stitch between seed stitch and body stitch edge at desired location near the location where armholes start, and sew in place..
